1. What instructional tools are provided for the physician and delivery staff?
- Complete instructions for collection are included in every cord blood collection kit; Utah Cord Bank also has staff available 24/7 to answer any of your healthcare professional’s questions. Most healthcare professionals are very familiar with cord blood collection.
2. Will the cord blood company actively contact the labor and delivery staff for you - or are parents responsible for keeping them informed and coordinated?
- Utah Cord Bank recommends that you inform your healthcare provider of your intentions to collect your child’s cord blood; they will generally note it in your file. It is your responsibility to bring the collection kit with you to the hospital.
3. What collection method do they use: gravity drip or blood draw?
- Our cord blood collection bag is gravity drip. It takes on average about 7-9 minutes for the blood to drain out of the cord blood into the blood bag.
4. Is the collection blood bag sterile, both inside and out, so that it can be used in the operating room for a C-section?
- Yes, the collection bag is sterile so it can be used for C-sections.
5. Do they provide the option of collecting additional stem cells from the placenta or tissue of the umbilical cord?
- The cord blood collection kit includes a sterile collection bag if you choose to store the umbilical cord tissue. At this time, we do not currently offer placenta storage, but are looking at adding this service in the near future.
6. Is the family cord blood bank a publicly-held or privately-held company?
- Utah Cord Bank, LLC is a privately held company.
7. Is the company affiliated with a hospital or research institution?
- We are not affiliated with any research institutions and we work with all hospitals.
8. Is the company involved in bio-technology research and development?
- Utah Cord Bank works with several biotech companies, universities and pharmaceutical companies throughout the United States.
9. What other medical services does the company perform?
- Utah Cord Bank banks cord blood and umbilical cord tissue for private storage. UCB partners with other manufacturers of cutting-edge regenerative medicine.
10. How long has the company been banking cord blood?
- Utah Cord Bank has been processing cord blood since 2004.
11. Who directs the day-to-day business of the company?
- Many cord blood banks have famous doctors on their Board of Directors; but they are not involved with the day-to-day operations.
Utah Cord Bank’s staff are all full-time employees, its Chief Scientific Officer, Regulatory Officer and Lab Technicians oversee the daily operations of the lab. All cord blood processing is conducted by highly qualified technical staff. 1
13. How many cord blood collections has the bank released from their own lab for therapy?
- As of January 2020, twelve cord blood samples have been released for therapy, with all 12 resulting in a successful transplant.
14. Is the cord blood laboratory accredited by an agency that has specific standards for cord blood banks and conducts inspections? (ex: AABB, FACT, ISO)
- The laborator is FDA Registered.
16. Does the lab process cord blood around the clock, or only on selected shifts?
- The lab will process 24/7. Most samples arrive Mon–Sat, but processing is available 24/7 for samples that arrive in the late evening, on Sunday or Holidays.
17. What tests does the lab perform on maternal blood?
- The lab does not require maternal blood samples to be drawn for testing; we will use current prenatal blood test results from mom. There is a form in the kit, that mom takes to her physician and they will sign off that mom has been tested for HIV 1&2, RPR (Syphilis), HCV and HbsASg. All these tests are routinely performed on mom throughout her pregnancy.
18. What tests does the lab perform for infectious disease markers?
- We use mom’s current blood testing results.
19. What tests does the lab perform for contamination?
- The lab performs an aerobic and anaerobic bacterial and fungal culture to test for contamination.
20. Does the lab ever reject cord blood collections on the basis of the tests of maternal blood, infectious diseases, or contamination?
- If mom is HIV positive, we do not store the cord blood. Depending on the type of bacteria, many samples can still be used, but may need to be pre treated with antibiotics prior to use.
21. Does the lab maintain a "quarantine tank" for the storage of blood that might be able to transmit an infection?
- Yes, we keep samples that test positive in a separate quarantine tank.
22. What tests does the lab perform to measure the stem cell count of the processed cord blood and the stem cell viability?
- Cord bloods are analyzed for Total Nucleated Cell (TNC) count, CD34+ count (Hematopoietic stem cell count) and 7-AAD for viability.
23. Does the lab/bank inform parents, prior to storage, if the collection is too small for a transplant, and give them the option not to save it?
- If the cord blood falls below standard volume and total nucleated cell count, Utah Cord Bank will contact the parents and allow them to make the decision on whether they would like to store their child’s cord blood or have it discarded.
24. Does the lab/bank offer parents a refund if the cord blood collection has certain problems (contamination, low volume)?
- Refunds are typically offered if the bank performed the collection as part of their service.If a sample is not viable to store, all monies are refunded less $150.
25. What information will parents receive in the final report about their stored cord blood?
- Parents will receive a certificate of storage with all the test results. We encourage parents to store the Certificate of Storage with their child’s important medical records.
26. Is the enrollment fee charged once per family, or for each birth?
- The enrollment fee is per birth, we do offer repeat client discounts. $200 discount per repeat client.
27. Is the first year of storage included in the processing fee?
- Yes, the storage fee is included in the processing fee. Please see pricing chart on web site.
28. Is the storage fee guaranteed fixed?
- Yes, the storage fee is fixed.
29. Are there any coupons currently available?
- Most banks are constantly running a "special limited time offer" Please check the home page for special promotions. We do offer special promotions throughout the year.
30. Are there any professional discounts?
- Yes, please call Utah Cord Bank for current professional discount options.
31. Do you offer military personnel discounts?
- Yes, we will deduct $200 off the first year’s total fee.
32. Do parents have the option of a partial or full refund if they decide not to store the cord blood for any reason? For example, if the lab tests show contamination and the cord blood should not be saved, what happens?
- If the cord blood has been processed and parents decide not to store the sample, all monies are refunded less $150. If the parents decide prior to process, all monies are refunded less $49.
33. Should the family ever need the cord blood, does the bank charge to release it.
- If the sample is ever needed for treatment, there is No fee for retrieval or shipping the sample within the United States. If being shipped outside the United States the shipping fee will be charged to the parents.
34. Is the cost of shipping included in the contract?
- Yes, the cost of shipping the sample from Hospital to the Lab is included.
35. Does the shipping company offer bed-side pick-up?
- Yes, shipping is included. Parents call FedEx for a pick up, and FedEx will come to the nurse’s station or reception desk of Labor and Delivery to pick up the cord blood. Most hospitals restrict outside access to labor and delivery rooms.
36. On weekends, are the laboratory staff in-house or on-call?
- The laboratory is staffed 24/7, they are also open on weekends and holidays.
37. Does the bank guarantee to get the blood to the lab and processed within a certain time window?
- Bloods are processed as they arrive at the lab within a few hours. If a sample arrives late due to weather, its processed right then.
38. Does the shipping container have a temperature logger?
- The shipping container does not have a temperature logger. All samples are placed in an insulated pouch that protects the cord blood from large fluctuations in temperature. The hematopoietic stem cells in cord blood are extremely hardy and can withstand fluctuations in temperature during shipping.
39. If the bank uses a courier, does the courier have possession of the cord blood throughout transit? (ie: Does the courier sub-contract to another shipping company that is not a medical courier)?
- Most samples are shipped via FedEx Clinical. FedEx ships more blood and tissue samples than anyone in the world on a daily basis. If a different courier is used, it is monitored the entire trip.
40. What type of records do parents receive after storage?
- Parents will receive a certificate of storage with all the test results.
41. Does your contract state that the storage fee is fixed, or may it increase later?
- The storage fee is fixed. It will not increase.
42. Does the bank reserve the right, in your contract, to change storage facilities?
- Yes, if the lab was to move (say to a larger space) or if the company was to sell.
43. Does the bank operate their own storage facility, or is it provided by another laboratory?
- Yes, Utah Cord Bank operates its own laboratory and storage facility.
44. What type of accreditation or other certifications does the storage facility carry?
- Utah Cord Bank’s FDA registration covers the lab and storage facility.
45. What is the geographic location of the storage facility: Is it at risk for hurricanes, earthquakes, or other natural disasters?
- The samples are stored in Salt Lake City, UT. There is little to no risk of hurricanes or earthquakes.
46. What type of back-up systems does the storage facility have in case of power failure?
- The samples are stored in nitrogen. There is battery backup and backup generator for the tanks and lab.
47. What type of security systems does the storage facility have?
- The lab is monitored 24/7 by alarms and cameras. Every tank has an alarm installed that monitors it’s temperature 24/7.
